Don't mess with Spock's 'rents.

I'm going to assume that Variety is very confused. Otherwise I might kill JJ Abrams. It make a lot more sense to assume that the Variety writer is just a non-Trekkie who doesn't know about Spock, than to assume that JJ is going to throw canon completely out the window. Right? Dear God, please tell me I'm right. I just don't see him doing that.

I've read that elsewhere, which is very, very worrisome.

It is a little, but I'm much more willing to thing it's a mistake from Variety. I can't actually see JJ Abrams making Spock's mom a Vulcan, but you know, it wouldn't be the first time someone has screwed around with Star Trek canon.

given Nimoy has signed on to the project, I would be *very* surprised if it turns out to be anything but a typo. Variety seems to be the source that the other articles. I'm betting they saw the reaction on the net and scrambled to catch up. None that I've seen actually cite official sources or quotes.

That's good. I mean, I couldn't ACTUALLY see that happening, but I was slightly worried anyway. I think it's my left over Enterprise But That's Not Canon issues.

Yup. The article has indeed been edited again. Entire first paragraph has changed, so has the subtitle and Winona is now pointedly (pardon the pun) referred to has Spock's human mother.

*singsongs* Somebody's in trouubbble.

I can only imagine the enraged emails they got. Don't mess with the Trek fans. They will eat you alive.

My icon is so delightfully appropriate now!

As much as this movie fills me with trepidation, I'm inclined to go with "Variety is clueless" on this count.

Tuvok's "Bitch, please." face never fails to bring me joy.

I think I'm missing something. The article currently says she's tapped to play his human mother. Was it edited?

Safe bet they did. I expect backpedaling and apologies to ensue at some point. They must've got slammed. *G*

Oh yes. It definitely said she was Spock's Vulcan mother.
